Protests have started again after the arrest of a prominent leader of the Maetai community on Saturday in Manipur. The administration has implemented prohibitory orders in five districts of Imphal Valley and has suspended internet services. In a video broadcast online, some people wearing black clothes were seen spraying petrol on themselves and threatening self -immolation. The stress has increased dramatically after the arrest of Maetai Armed Military Group Arambai Teengol.
Amidst the current tension, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla held a review meeting of the security situation in the state with senior administrative and security officials on Sunday. During the meeting, various matters related to the current law and order situation in the state were widely discussed and reviewed. On this occasion, Security Advisor, Director General of Police (DGP), Commissioner (Home), Secretary of Governor, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), IGAR (S), Inspector General of Police, CRPF and other senior officials were present.

A group of MLAs met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. During the discussion, the legislators apprised the governor of the state’s current law and order situation and requested their intervention to help in finding a cordial solution. The governor told the delegation that all necessary steps are being taken to remove concerns and restore general situation.
A police officer said, ‘Violent protests started after the arrest of a leader of Arambai Teengol. Three people have been injured in a clash with protesters and security personnel. All precautionary measures have been taken. There were clashes with security forces at many places in the state capital, in which a bus set a bus on fire in Khurai Lamlong area of Imphal East. Security personnel fired several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd at a major clash site near Kangla Gate just 200 meters from Raj Bhavan. The voices of many bullets were heard in Qwakethel, although it is not yet clear who was responsible for the firing.

Why did violence now erupted in Manipur?
The arrest of Kanan Singh, a member of Arambai Teengol by the Central Bureau of Investigation, has given rise to fresh unrest in Manipur. The CBI said that Singh was involved in criminal activities related to the Manipur violence in 2023. He was arrested from Imphal Airport on Saturday. The protesters surrounded the entrance to the Imphal Airport and came out on the streets and blocked a major route to prevent the authorities from transferring the leader detained out of the state. The CBI said, “The Anti -Corruption Branch of Central Bureau of Investigation, Guwahati has arrested Kanan Singh, a member of the Armbai Teengol (AT) at Imphal Airport today. He was involved in various criminal activities related to the Manipur violence in 2023. Information related to his arrest has been given to his family members. He has been brought from Imphal to Guwahati and will be produced in a competent court for police remand.

Internet suspended, prohibition issued
As a precautionary step, the authorities have implemented prohibitory orders in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thulbal, Bishnupur and Kakching districts. Apart from this, these valley areas have also been suspended in these valley areas- Visat and VPN Access. An official order states, ‘Given the current law and order situation in the districts especially Imphal East, Imphal West, Thulbal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts, there is a possibility that some anti -social elements may have a large impact on social media in the state to transmit photos, hate speech and disgust video messages, which may have a large impact on social media and order to spread public sentiments, which may have a large scale use of law and order in the state. Is.’ The district administration has banned five or more people from gathering at one place together under sub -section 2 of Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS) and banned sticks, stones, firearms and sharp weapons. Residents in Imphal East and Bishnupur districts have been ordered to stay indoors from 10 pm on Saturday night to further orders.
