In ancient times, a gardener named Hem lived in the palace of King Kubera in Alkapuri Nagar. His job was to bring flowers from Mansarovar to worship Lord Shiva. One day, due to spending time with his wife, he reached the court with late flowers. Enraged by this, King Kubera cursed him with leprosy.
Due to the curse, Hem Mali started wandering and one day Markandeya reached the ashram of the sage. The sage understood the reason for Hem’s position from his divine point of view and advised him to fast on Yogini Ekadashi. Due to the effect of this fast, Hem’s leprosy was cured and he attained salvation.
