The first monsoon rains in Dhanbad, Jharkhand have exposed the corruption in the construction of the bridge. The new bridge on the Jamunia river at a cost of six crore rupees broke before the opening. The bridge was built near the Matigarh Dame Colony in Baghmara with the aim of connecting Dhanbad and Bokaro districts, but after the recent rains, a part of it and the approach road were completely damaged.
Local people have accused serious irregularities and corruption in bridge construction. A part of the bridge broke. Along with this, big cracks have also come in the approach road. This project was being operated by Rural Development Special Division Dhanbad under Mukhyamantri Gram Setu Yojana. On 10 August 2022, the then MLA and current MP Dhulu Mahato laid the foundation stone of this bridge.
The construction work was assigned to a company called Preeti Enterprises. Narendra Kumar, Executive Engineer of Rural Development Division Dhanbad, inspected the spot and said that a total of six crore projects are yet to be paid for Rs 1.5 crore. He also said that some works were left and the sensor has been instructed to repair the damaged part immediately.
Local resident Vijay Chauhan said that the condition of the bridge shows that there has been heavy corruption in construction. He said that when the bridge breaks before the inauguration, it is a clear proof of the negligence of the administration and the construction agency. At present, there have been indications of investigation from the administration, but there is anger among the general public and people are demanding concrete action.
