Today’s date i.e. 25 June is a very special day for every Indian cricket fans. Because on this day, in the year 1983, the Indian team became the world champion for the first time in Lord’s. India won the World Cup for the first time by winning the West Indies by 43 runs in the final. Throughout the tournament, the Indian team had shown a shocking performance to veteran teams like Australia, England and West Indies as a world champion by dusting them.
Kapil Dev’s team broke the Windies Gurur
On one hand in this final, the West Indies team that won the title twice, and on the other side there was a poor performance in the last two World Cups (1975, 1979). The West Indies won the toss and invited India to bat first and covered only 183 runs in 54.4 overs (then 60 overs had ODI international matches). Krishnamachari Srikanth scored the highest 38 runs for India, which later proved to be the highest individual score of the final.

This was not a big goal for the Windies, but Balwinder Singh Sandhu bowled Gordon Greenies for just one run and gave India a lot of success. The Caribbean team was shocked at the score of just five. However, after this, Vivian Richards scored 33 runs while batting.

Richards, who had gathered eyes, suddenly played an elevated shot towards mid -wicket off Madan Lal’s ball. Kapil took a long race on his backward race. The Windies lost the third wicket at a score of 57. With this precious wicket, the enthusiasm of the Indian team doubled.

Windies’ innings again shattered
Richards was to be dismissed that the innings of the West Indies shattered. At one time, 6 wickets fell for 76 runs. Eventually the entire team was reduced to 140 runs in 52 overs. As the last wicket, Michael Holding’s wicket fell and Lord’s ground was immersed in India’s victory. Madan Lal took three wickets for 31 runs, Mohinder Amarnath had demolished the challenge of Lloyd’s haunted by taking three wickets for 12 runs and Sandhu for 32 runs.
Mohinder Amarnath was the ‘man of the match’ with his all -round performance (26 runs and 3 wickets) in the final after the semi -final. After this historic success, Team India, under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, served to win the ODI Cup again in 2011 after 28 years.
