Joharan Mamdani, son of Indian-American film producer Meera Nair, who won the election of New York City Democratic Primary and becoming the mayor of the city, is on target over his statement about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An old video of him is going viral in which he is targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 2002 Gujarat riots and accusing Muslims of being reduced from Gujarat. After the video went viral, not only the people of India but also in their constituency, people of the Indian American community with about two lakh numbers have also been criticized.
The 33 -year -old Mammadani is moving towards becoming the first Muslim of New York City and he claimed last month that so many people were killed in the 2002 Gujarat riots that people now do not even believe that we (Muslims) live.
He made this comment on a platform during the election of the mayor candidate within the Democratic Party in 2023. During this time he was asked whether the mayor candidate would be present with the Prime Minister during his visit to New York?
Mamdani then compared Prime Minister Modi to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming that Modi should also be seen as a ‘war criminal’ just like his Israeli counterpart.
In all the allegations made against PM Modi regarding 2002 Gujarat riots, he got a clean chit and the Supreme Court also acquitted him with all the allegations.
Criticism of Mamdani’s claim
In the viral video, Mamdani is claiming that there are only Muslims left in Gujarat. His statement was criticized by many people, including opposition leaders of India. Many people cited the last published census data of Gujarat, according to which the number of Muslims in the state population in 2011 was at least 10% i.e. 60 lakhs.
Describing the claims of Mamdani as false, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi wrote on X on Thursday, ‘When Johran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan’s PR team takes a day off. India does not need such enemies whose friends are lying to New York.
Indian-American and Indu Vishwanathan, who lives in New York, who describes herself on their X profiles, have criticized Mamdani’s ‘Srasar False’.
He tweeted, ‘I question his honesty because he shamelessly lies. They lie because they will be rewarded for lying. Their lies make such a narrator that can become the mayor.
Another Indian American Siddharth, who describes his X profile as a geopolitical strategist, tweeted, “Today, Gujarat has more than 68 lakh Muslims in Gujarat.”
Political analyst Omar Ghazi said that Mamdani’s statement ‘is not only inflammatory and false, but also insults the existence of a lively Muslim population of more than 60 lakhs in Gujarat.’ He said, ‘This shows that Mamdani can lie to achieve her ideological goals.’
