South Kolkata’s South Calcutta Law College is in the news. A sensational case of gang rape with a young woman has come to light here on the night of 25 June. On the basis of the facts of the victim’s statement and the initial investigation, the police have arrested three accused. Among them is an alumni leader. While there are two current students. Know what is the profile of the three and what action has been taken so far?
1. Manjit Mishra (main accused)
Alumni. Former President of South Calcutta Law College Unit. Age- 31 years.
Manjit Mishra, once a popular face of student politics, is now the main accused in the serious criminal case. Manjit, who belongs to the middle -class Bengali family, studied at South Calcutta Law College and from there he entered the Trinamool Congress Students’ Council (TMCP) politics.
Manjit has been associated with student politics for almost a decade and was recognized as a ‘power center’ in the college campus. During the union disputes, allegations of pressure and threats were made before, but there was never any formal complaint. Sources say that due to being close to the party, he often avoided disciplinary action.
However, despite completion of studies, it was regularly seen in the college campus and maintained an impact on the students.
Currently, Manjit was arrested by the police at around 7 pm on 26 June. Police say that Manjit has been arrested from Siddharth Shankar Rai Shishu Garden near Talbgan Crossing. His mobile phone has also been seized.
2. Jab Ahmed (Co-accused)
South is a first year student at Calcutta Law College. Age- 19 years.
Jab, a resident of Topasia region, comes from a simple working family. In the 2024-25 session, he enrolled in college and gradually started participating in union activities. According to the students, the jab is of calm nature and easily comes into effect. He has no criminal record nor has any disciplinary warning filed earlier. It is believed that during the activities of the college union, he met Manjit Mishra, which increased the close.
According to the information, exactly 15 minutes after Manjit Mishra i.e. on June 26 at 7:35 pm, Jab was also caught from the same place. The police has also seized his mobile.
3. Pramit Mukherjee alias Pramit Mukhopadhyay (co-accused)
Calcutta is a second year student in Law College itself. Is local resident. Age- 20 years.
Pramit has been a relatively low-profile student compared to the remaining two accused. He was not active in politics in college, but was close to a particular group of students. Pramit, who comes from the lower-middle class Bengali family, is known as a friend ‘quiet and average student’. He has no criminal records before this incident.
In recent times, he has often been seen in the evening with Manojo and Jab. The police is trying to find out that he had an active role in this case or he joined some pressure or influence.
Pramit was detained by the police from his house at 12:30 pm on 27 June. The mobile phone is confiscated and it will be sent for forensic investigation.
All three accused sent on police remand
The three accused were produced in Alipur court on 27 June, where the police sought a 14 -day remand. The court has sent all the three to police custody till next Tuesday. Kasba police station is investigating the case. Police say that every angle is being investigated. Forensic investigation of the scene is to be done. The college campus has been sealed.
What is the whole matter
According to the complaint, between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday, the girl was gangraped inside the campus of South Calcutta Law College, South Kolkata. Police sources said that the girl had come to fill the examination form in the college at 12 noon on Wednesday. The victim told that she was sitting in the college union room. Meanwhile, the main accused Manojit Mishra came and directed to close the main gate of the college and then he was forcibly taken to the security guard room and raped.
The names of Manjit Mishra, Jab Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee are included in the three people who have been described as the main accused in the FIR. Mishra is currently the South Kolkata District General Secretary of TMC Students Council.
The victim told her pain …
The victim alleged that Manjit Mishra had proposed marriage to her, but when she refused to say that she already had a lover, he got angry. In a statement given to the police, he said that the accused locked him in the room. He then threatened to kill him and his lover and threatened to arrest his parents.
The victim said that I grabbed her legs, but she did not leave me. He forcibly took me to the guard room and raped me. The victim also told that the accused made a video of the rape and threatened that the video would be made public if she did not cooperate. He tried to escape, protested, but the accused tried to kill him with a hockey stick, causing serious injuries to him. Medical examination of the victim was conducted, in which the gang rape has been confirmed. The victim’s allegations have been confirmed by forensic evidence.
