The Narendra Modi government on Saturday appointed senior IPS officer Parag Jain as the next secretary of India’s External Intelligence Agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Jain, a 1989 batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre, will take charge for a fixed term of two years on 1 July. He will replace the current chief Ravi Sinha, whose term will end on June 30.

Jain, who is said to be systematic and rational by senior officials, has played many important roles in his entire career. He was promoted to the post of Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab on January 1, 2021, although he was then serving on central deputation and thus he had only nominal benefits. He was appointed to the post of equivalent to the Central DGP, which constates his credibility for leadership in the national intelligence structure. Jain has previously represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka. The appointment committee of the cabinet approved his name on 28 June.
