After this incident, there was a political stir in West Bengal and widespread outrage against the ruling Trinamool Congress, especially due to the alleged involvement of a leader of the party’s student wing. The incident took place only a few months after the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress condemned the gang rape and urged that the matter should not be politicized. Addressing a press conference, Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Minister of West Bengal Shashi Panja said that the state government is standing firmly with the victim student and her family.

The opposition BJP alleged that this incident highlights that students are not safe in educational institutions across the state. Union Minister and BJP’s West Bengal President Sukant Majumdar claimed that the law and order situation in the state is pathetic despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directly monitoring the Home Department. Sukant Majumdar was taken into custody on Saturday. At the Law College Campus, he attended a huge protest rally organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party against the gang rape with a first year student. The state BJP chief also accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of giving protection to the accused, as he is associated with his party.
