About 34 lakh census and supervisors, about 1.3 lakh census workers will be deployed for the census.

The 16th census of India will be done in 2027 with caste census. The census will take place on 1 October 2026 in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand and in the rest of the country on 2027.

The census will be done in two stages. In the first phase, the housing operation, information about the residential status, property and facilities of every house will be gathered.

The central government has issued instructions to all departments to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of municipal corporations, revenue villages, tehsils, sub-divisions or districts before 31 December 2025.

It is 16th and 8th census after independence. This census will be done after 16 years, as the last census was done in 2011.

India’s General Registrar and Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan said that from April 1, 2026, the appointment of houses, appointment of supervisors and counting staff, work will be distributed.

The census of the population will begin on 1 February 2027.

3 dozen questions prepared for housing

The General Registrar and Census Commissioner Office has prepared about three dozen questions asked by the citizens. This time during the survey, homes will be asked about the ownership of items like phones, internet, vehicle (bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, car, jeep, van) and equipment (radio, TV, transistor).

Citizens will also be asked about grain consumption, drinking water and lighting, types of toilets and access to them, disposal of waste water, bathing and kitchen facilities, fuel used for cooking and LPG/PNG connections.

The rest of the questions include the materials used for the floor, walls and roof of the house, its status, number of residents, the number of residents, married couples and whether the head of the house is a woman or from the Scheduled Castes or Tribes.

After this, in the second phase i.e. Population Count (PE), all the members of every household will be taken, socio-economic, cultural and other information will be taken.

Administrative demarcation deadline 31 December 2025

The central government has issued instructions to all departments to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of municipal corporations, revenue villages, tehsils, sub-divisions or districts before 31 December 2025. States and union territories have been asked to ensure that there will be no change in the boundaries of the administrative unit between 1 January 2026 and 31 March 2027 during the census.

Any change in existing boundaries will have to be reported to the Directorates of Census in the States and Union Territories by 31 December 2025, because on this day for Census 2027, the limitations of administrative units will be freed.

According to the rules, census can be done only three months after determining the boundaries of administrative units like districts, sub-districts, tehsils, talukas and police stations.

Blocks will be made to distribute work

The work load for the calculating employees can be distributed equally, for this, an administrative unit is divided into the managerial section called blocks. Block is a clear defined area within a village or town on a fictional map for the purposes of census.

They are called Husselisting Blocks (HLB) and Population Counts during Husselisting Operation and Calculate Blocks (EB) and they serve as the smallest administrative unit for the census.
