Keeping China in mind, India has made an emergency air strip of 4.5 km on National Highway-27 in Assam. Keeping an eye on China and focusing more on the strategic preparations of the Northeast, India’s latest project for Emergency Landing Facility of aircraft on NH-27 between Demo and Moran in Assam is almost complete. This air strip is 4.5 km (4500 meters) long and is located near Dibrugarh, on which fighter jets and transport aircraft can land in an emergency.

In the next few days, the Indian Air Force’s Eastern Air Command is expected to make the aircraft landing on this airstrip. The project will strengthen India’s quick response capacity in the sensitive eastern region bordering China. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this information on the first day of his two -day visit to the upper regions of Assam on Sunday. He said that this 4.5 km long part of National Highway-27 is being designed for landing of Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter aircraft including Sukhoi and Rafael.

The Indian Air Force is currently inspecting this air strip and it is expected that the trial landing of fighters will start by September and the airstrip will be completely operational by October. Chief Minister Sarma told reporters, ‘In the middle of the national highway, we are developing an important emergency landing facility on the Demo-Morn section. Whether it is Civil Aviation or Indian Air Force (IAF), if the aircraft is unable to land at Dibrugarh Airport for any reason, this airstrip will serve as an alternative.

This Emergency Landing Facility has been created by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The Assam CM said that discussions are going on with the Indian Air Force to ensure that advanced fighter aircraft can be landed on the airstrip and it can be used for air shows in future. He said, ‘This is the first such landing faction in the Northeast. The Government of India has already approved two more- one in Boroma-Tihu in the lower Assam and the second in Shankardevanagar between Nagaon and Lumding. We will first inaugurate it and then start work on the rest.

The Chief Minister also informed about the plan to build a helipad at regular intervals along the highway. He said, ‘We are trying to build new helipads in high areas along the highway. During the flood, when there is no safe place to take off the helicopter, these helipads are very important. The plan is to make a helipad every 50 to 100 kilometers. From Numaligarh to Dibrugarh-Tinsukia, our goal is to convert the entire route into a modern corridor. He said that this facility will increase Assam’s disaster response abilities, especially when it is not possible to reach the traditional runway during floods. The Chief Minister assured that these schemes are being coordinated with the Ministry of Defense, NHIDCL and Center to implement these schemes.
