Former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is now expected to meet his popular name Captain Cool now. Dhoni recently applied for trademark registration for the name “Captain Cool”, which has now been approved and advertised. This trademark Dhoni has registered under Class 41 for sports training, training facilities and sports coaching services. This trademark not only gives legal protection to their name, but it also further strengthens their brand value and identity.
Sharing information about this achievement, Dhoni’s lawyer Mansi Aggarwal said that the matter shows how the specificity related to personal branding and identity is legally useful, even if there is already a similar trademark.
Dhoni’s “Captain Cool” trademark received objections under Section 11 (1) of the Trademark Act earlier. The reason for this was that a trademark was already registered with this name and the new trademark could create confusion among the people. But it was argued by Dhoni that the name “Captain Cool” has been associated with Dhoni for the last several years and has been adopted by the public, media and fans on a large scale.

It was said that this name has now become a commercial identity of Dhoni, not just a surname. Due to Dhoni’s popularity, coverage in media and identity of fans, this name will no longer create confusion for anyone else. This identity of Dhoni exists before that first trademark and is far more famous.
The Trademark Registry accepted this argument and admitted that “Captain Cool” is not just a common word but is part of Dhoni’s personality, brand and image.
Why is this matter special?
This case shows that a particular person can provide legal protection to his identity and image through a trademark, even though there is already a trademark of equal name. Dhoni’s lawyer said that this is an impressive example, in which the identity of a player has been recognized as a brand.
Please tell that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the captain of Team India for a long time. He was called Captain Cool due to his ability to turn the match in a cool style from behind the wicket. Dhoni has said goodbye to international cricket. But in the IPL, he is seen captaining for Chennai Super Kings.
