Thailand Gets New PM: There was a unique turn in Thailand politics when Prime Minister Partagarn Shinavatra was suspended on Tuesday due to a leaked call. In his place, Deputy PM Suriya Jungurungarengkit was appointed as the acting Prime Minister, but his term will be only one day.
What are the allegations on Partagarna?
In a leaked call, Pitragarnas allegedly criticized the army and made a statement in favor of Cambodia, which is considered to be a violation of the Minister’s Code of Conduct under the Thai Constitution. The constitutional court said that there is enough doubt against them, so they have been suspended until the investigation is completed. They have to answer in 15 days.
One day Prime Minister!
Soon after suspension, 70 -year -old Suria was made the acting Prime Minister for Wednesday. He is currently the Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Interestingly, it was the same day when the 93rd anniversary of the Prime Minister’s Office was being celebrated in Bangkok and Suria will not be able to handle that office even 93 hours.
There will be a new change on Thursday
On Thursday, the new Home Minister and Deputy PM will be made the new Home Minister and Deputy PM under the already fixed cabinet reshuffle. According to the party, due to the seniority of the post of deputy PM, Phumtham will be handed over the reins of the country in place of Suria.
Who is the Partagarna?
Partagartar comes from Thailand’s most influential political legacy and is the daughter of former Prime Minister Thacasin Shinavatra. She became Prime Minister in August 2023, but due to controversy and power struggles, her tenure has come into crisis. Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinavatra was removed from power in 2006 through a military coup. Since then, his family has been continuously centers of controversies and power struggle in Thai politics.
Political analysts believe that this suspension of the Prime Minister is not just a constitutional or legal process, but an attempt to weaken the democratically elected government by the army and conservative powers.
