Kerala General Education Minister V Shivnakutty described the students to wash the feet of retired teachers on Guru Purnima in two CBSE schools of the state against condemnable and democratic values. He said that clarification will be sought from the school management on this.

He said that the government is taking such incidents seriously. The purpose of education is to make children aware and progressive. Such activities weaken the basic objectives of our education system.

In fact, some reports stated that there was a ritual of worship (foot washing) in two CBSE schools of Indian Vidyantan management in Kasargod and Mavelikkara on Guru Purnima. The controversy increased as soon as it came in front of it.

Students Federation of India (SFI) also said that the ritual was performed in RSS-controlled schools. It is condemnable for children to wash the feet of retired teachers.

Right to action on schools who do not accept Right to Education Act

Education is a right for which it was fought and won from the time when literacy was deprived of literacy in the name of caste system. This right should not be trampled under anyone’s feet. Strict steps will be taken to prevent such activities from happening again in educational institutions.

Shivnakutty also clarified that the General Education Department has the right to take action against any syllabus schools that do not follow the Right to Education Act and rules.
