Air India flight AI 171 flew at 1.38 pm on June 12 and the accident occurred at 1.40 pm. At that time the plane was at an altitude of 200 feet.
A month after the Ahmedabad plane accident, an initial investigation report appeared on 12 July. Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) made a 15 -page report public. According to preliminary investigation, the accident occurred due to the closure of both engines of the aircraft.
Soon after the takeoff, both fuel switches were closed one by one, due to which both engines also stopped. During this, recording of the cockpit has shown that a pilot asked the other if you have closed the switch? The other replied, no.
Aviation expert Captain Mohan Ranganathan said that seeing the report, it seems that the accident was intentionally done. However, former Aaib Chief Retired Group Captain Aurobindo Handa said- In most cases the initial investigation is different from the final report.
Expert said- Fuel switch can be changed manually Aviation expert Captain Ranganathan told NDTV that fuel supply in Dreamliner’s engines can be closed manually. There is no other way to close fuel. This work will have to be done by hand. This cannot be caused by automatic or power cut.
The fuel switch is designed in such a way that they are taken out of the slot to replace them. That is, they cannot be closed at fault or inadvertently.
Former AAIB director said- There is a difference in the initial and final report While some experts are claiming the mistake of the pilot. At the same time, former AAIB director retired group Captain Aurobindo Handa says that in most cases the initial and final report of aircraft accident investigation varies.
Talking to NDTV Profit, Handa said- Ahmedabad plane crash will be very difficult for Aaib as most of the aircraft is burnt down and the final report may take time to arrive.
The investigation team will have to consult the exact cause of the accident or perhaps a possible cause. The report that has come now has facts of incidents in just 30 seconds. This is not a final report.
On June 12, a flight AI from Ahmedabad to London collided with a medical hostel building shortly after the 171 takeoff. It killed 270 people, including 241 passengers and crew members. Only one passenger is left alive in this accident.
Pilot could not save the crash after trying According to the report, the fuel switches of both engines in the accident aircraft were closed, after which the pilots turned on it and tried to resume both engines. But the aircraft was very low, so the engines could not get time to get strength again and the aircraft crashed. However, it has not been revealed how the fuel switches were closed.
According to the report of 15 pages, the entire flight from takeoff to accident lasted about 30 seconds. Till this time, no warning or action has been recommended for an operator regarding Boeing 787-8 aircraft and GE GENX-1B engine in the report. Also, the report does not mention any reason like weather, bird-hit and sabotaz.
What came out in the investigation, know in the question-answer format …
Question: What happened in the air?
answer: The report reported that a few seconds after flying, the two engines closed in the air itself – the fuel cutoff switch turned from Run (current engine) to cutoff (closed engine) in only one second after the other. The engines had stopped receiving fuel supply.
Question: What did the pilots talk? answer: Cockpit audio has also surfaced in which a pilot asked, “Why did you close (engine)?” The other replied, “I didn’t.”
Question: Was there an attempt to start the engine again? answer: The pilots tried to restart the engine. N1 or engine 1 turned somewhat turned on, but the engine could not start before the 2 crash. The aircraft was in the air for only 32 seconds.
Question: Was there any problem in fuel? answer: Fuel testing found that there was no problem in fuel. The thrust liver was completely broken, but the black box showed that the takeoff thrust was at that time that indicates disconnecting. The power of the engine of the aircraft is controlled through the thrust liver.
Question: Was there any problem of bird hitting? answer: Flap settings (5 degrees) and gear (below) were normal to fly. There was no problem related to bird hitting.
Question: How was the weather during the accident? answer: The sky was completely clean. Visibility was also fine. There was no situation like thunderstorms.
Question: Was the pilots medically fit? answer: Both pilots were medically fit. He had no problem. The pilot in command had 15 thousand hours and the co-pilot had 3400 hours of flight experience.
Question: Investigation issued an advisory for the airline company, answer: The report said that this is an initial investigation, it is still going on. At present, no advisory is being issued to the Boeing airline or General Electric (GE).
APAI said- Do not reach any conclusion by pilots’ conversation
Airline Pilots Association of India (APAI) has written a letter to the agency PTI. It is said that The initial investigation report of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) seems to have been the fault of the pilots in the crash. We dismiss this completely. We demand fair and evidence based inquiry.
APAI said- InvestigationThe report was leaked in the media without any responsible officer’s sign and information. There is a lack of transparency in the investigation. The reliability of the investigation is questioned. Public trust is decreasing. Eligible, experienced employees, especially line pilots are still not being included in the investigation team. Fuel switch work and technology
The fuel control switch is near the Thrust Lever in the cockpit of the aircraft.
The cockpit of the fuel switch aircraft has near the thrust liver. They control the supply of fuel in the engine. Its main task is to start the supply of fuel in the engine (‘run’ position) or shut down (‘cutoff’ position).
Different fuel control switches for each engine. For example, Boeing 787 has two engines, so there will be two switches – for a left engine, for a right.
Run Position: When the switch is on ‘run’, the fuel valve opens and the fuel supply starts in the engine. This keeps the engine on and the aircraft gets a thrust.
Cutoff Position: When the switch is done on the ‘cutoff’, the fuel valve is closed and the supply of fuel in the engine stops. This stops the engine immediately.
Fuel switches are spring-loaded and contain details (a kind of lock), which keeps them stable in their positions. The switch requires three steps to move – catching, taking out of the details, and releasing. This is not a normal switch that gets buried by accidentally. Read full news …
RAM air turbine opened as the aircraft flew
Aaib has confirmed RAT to be commissioned in CCTV footage.
The report also stated that RAM air turbine (RAT) opened as soon as the engine stopped. It is a small propeller -like device. It rotates at the speed of the wind and produces electricity and hydropholic power. Especially when the main power of the aircraft is cut, or the hydraulic system fails. The RAT helps the aircraft to keep the minimum navigation and control system a little operation.
Crash site photo …
Boeing said- supporting investigating agencies After the report, Boeing said in his statement, ‘Our condolences are with the passengers of AI Flight 171, crew members and families of the affected people in Ahmedabad. We are fully cooperating with the investigating agencies and our customers. ‘ The statement came after Aaib’s initial investigation report.
Why is the fuel switch so important? Both engines of Dreamliner aircraft have two positions called runs and cutoffs. If the aircraft is in the air and the switch goes to the cutoff, the engine stops getting fuel, which eliminates the thrust and can also stop the power supply, which can also shut down many cockpit equipment.
