Nimisha priya: All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on Saturday (July 12, 2025) claimed that the central government is not taking any steps to intervene in the case of hanging of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen.
Venugopal said that it is sad that despite the issue being brought to the attention of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs, the Center is not showing any readiness in this matter. AICC General Secretary Venugopal is also an MP from Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency. He said in a post on social media platform X that the death sentence given to Priya is ‘gross ridicule of justice’.
He said in the post, ‘He is a victim of unimaginable cruelty and domestic misconduct on foreign soil, which has been brought close to a very bad situation. He should not get the death penalty. I have written a letter to the Prime Minister demanding immediate intervention to stop his hanging.
One crore raised for Priya’s release
Meanwhile, prominent businessman Bobby Chemmanur told a TV channel that he has raised an amount of one crore rupees for the release of Priya and he will soon go to Oman and meet the person who has promised to help in talks for his release.
To be hanged on 16 July
The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) of Kerala on Friday urged the central government to take immediate steps to reduce Nimisha’s sentence. Nimisha Priya, a resident of Kollangode in Palakkad district, was convicted in 2020 for killing a man from Yemen, who was her business partner.
This incident took place in July 2017. In November last year, the appeal of Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council rejected the appeal and the country’s government prosecutor has now ordered that he be hanged on Tuesday 16 July. Priya is currently lodged in Sana Central Jail.
