Odisha: On getting married in the same gotra, the tribal couple were tied to the village with a solution – Odisha Tribal Couple Punished for Same Clan Marriage LCLNT

A very surprising case has come to light from the tribal dominated Koraput district of Odisha. Here in Nadimitiki village of Narayanapatna block, a newly married tribal couple were tied with a plow and rotated in the entire village, because they got married in the same gotra. This incident happened on Sunday.

Video of the incident viral on social media
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, in which it can be seen that the young man is tied with a wooden plow and is being paraded in the entire village. However, news agency PTI has not confirmed the veracity of this video.

According to local villagers, getting married in the same gotra is considered against tribal traditions and it is considered to be a possibility of ‘misfortune’ on the community, especially the fear of having a bad effect on crops.

Nagesh Tandi, an elder of the village, said, ‘According to our tradition, such relationships are considered abusive for society. The punishment for rotating with a plow was a symbolic warning.

‘Purification ritual’
After the incident, the elders of the village performed a ‘purification ritual’ and then the couple were allowed to live with the young man’s father. Inspector in Charge (IIC) of Narayanapatna Police Station, Pramod Nayak said that a case has been registered on the basis of the video and a team has been sent to the village for investigation.

This is the second such incident in Odisha this week. Earlier in Raigadha district too, a couple was forced to plow the field by tying a plow. Demand for strict action on such incidents from the government and administration has started to arise so that such derogatory ‘social decisions’ can be stopped.
