Supreme Court hearing delays farmer leader Dallewal’s hunger strike case Punjab Government responds ann | Dallewal Hunger Strike: Hearing on Dallewal’s fast postponed again in Supreme Court, Punjab government said

Farmers Protest: The hearing in the Supreme Court regarding farmer leader Jagjit Dallewal, who has been fasting unto death for 43 days, has been postponed to Friday, January 10. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal appeared on behalf of the Punjab government in the hearing held on Monday. He asked for some more time. Sibal told that the state government is talking to the protesting farmers. Farmers are also going to meet the high powered committee formed by the Supreme Court. In such a situation, it is expected that the agitating farmers will agree.

In the last hearing, the Supreme Court had criticized the Punjab government for failing to shift Dallewal to the hospital. The court had also said that if the central government gives some assurance regarding the demands of the farmers, then the deadlock can end. Farmer organizations of Punjab have been agitating for a long time for MSP (Minimum Support Price) guarantee and other demands. Due to this, many roads including Shambhu and Khanauri border are closed.

Supreme Court formed 5 member high powered committee

On September 2, 2024, the Supreme Court had formed a 5-member high powered committee under the leadership of Justice Nawab Singh, former judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court. The committee was asked to talk to farmers on MSP and other issues.

Expectations of talks between government and farmer leaders

Talks are going on between Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), but SKM (NP) is not taking part in these talks. Meanwhile, hopes for talks between the government and farmer leaders have increased, but Dallewal’s health condition may become a challenge for these talks.
