Congress leader Sajjan Kumar: The Supreme Court has refused to postpone the sentence of Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Balwan Khokhar, who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1984 Sikh riot case. The court has said that it will hold a final hearing on the appeal of both against the sentence in July. If the hearing is not held then both can request the court to postpone the sentence.
On December 17, 2018, Delhi High Court had sentenced Sajjan Kumar to life in jail in a riot case. Besides, the sentence given to some other convicts including Balwan Khokhar by the lower court was upheld. The case in which these people have been punished is of the murder of 5 Sikhs in Raj Nagar area of ​​Delhi.
Have already demanded release
Even before this, Sajjan Kumar had sought bail from the Supreme Court several times. But the court has refused this. In 2021, Sajjan had also filed a bail petition citing ill health. He had also sought permission for treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram at his own expense. But on September 3, 2021, the Supreme Court, while rejecting the petition, had said, “You are guilty of a heinous crime. Do not expect VIP facilities. If the jail authorities and doctors feel necessary, they will take you to the hospital.”
Sentence was pronounced in 2018
On December 17, 2018, Delhi High Court had sentenced Balwan Khokhar and Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment. During this time, apart from former Navy officer Bhagmal, the High Court had upheld the sentence given by the trial court to former Congress councilor Balwan Khokhar, Girdhari Lal and two others. Sajjan Kumar surrendered in Karkardooma Court on 31 December 2018.
