A very sad news has come out from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. Here, the fourth year students of 21 -year -old Ritam Mandal, Mechanical Engineering were found hanging in their hostel room on Friday morning. After the incident, the college administration informed his father Uttam Mandal. This incident took place around 11:30 am. When Ritam did not open the door for a long time and did not respond, the friends told the college administration. After this, the police called and found Retam hanging from the fan on breaking the door. He was immediately rushed to BC Roy Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Family accused of ragging
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased student has claimed that ragging was done with Ritam Mandal on the IIT campus, due to which he took this suicidal step. However, the college administration has not yet responded to these allegations. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and further investigation is on. Since 2022, seven students have allegedly committed suicide in the IIT Kharagpur campus. Four such cases have been reported alone this year. He lived in a hostel called Rajendra Prasad Hall of IIT Kharagpur campus.
Such cases have happened before
Let us tell you that this is a case of 7th suicide in IIT Kharagpur in the last 3 years. So far, incidents of suicide of 4 students have come to light in the year 2025. The step has been taken by the institute two months after the institute set up a 10 -member committee to investigate and solve mental health challenges within its campus community in view of student suicides.
