Tharoor was speaking at an event on ‘peace, harmony and national development’ in Kochi on Saturday.
Congress leader and MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor said that the first loyalty of any leader should be towards the country, not towards the party. Tharoor was speaking at an event on ‘peace, harmony and national development’ in Kochi on Saturday.
Tharoor said that parties are just one way, there are means to improve the country. If the country is not left, then what is the use of parties? Therefore, when there is a question of security of the country, then all parties should work together. He said-
When we say that the country should work with other parties, some people consider it a betrayal from the party. This is the biggest problem. The contest in politics goes on, but everyone should unite in difficult times.
Tharoor said this when he recently praised Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy and supported the government and army on Operation Sindoor. After this, there was resentment about his statement in the Congress party.
July 10: Tharoor described Emergency as a black chapter
On July 10, Shashi Tharoor wrote an article published in the Malayalam language newspaper ‘Deepika’ that Emergency should not only be remembered as a black chapter of Indian history, but it is necessary to take lessons from it. He described the sterilization campaign as an arbitrary and cruel decision.
He wrote that the steps taken for discipline and arrangement sometimes turn into such cruelty, which cannot be called appropriate in any way.
50 years ago on 25 June 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed an emergency in the country. It was in force till March 21, 1977. During this time the central government had taken many strict decisions.
Tharoor said- sterilization campaign was an arbitrary decision Tharoor wrote, ‘Indira Gandhi’s son Sanjay Gandhi’s forced sterilization campaign became an example of cruelty. Violence and pressure were resorted to to meet the target in poor rural areas. Slums were brutally broken in cities like New Delhi. Thousands of people became homeless. No attention was paid to them.
Said- democracy should not be taken lightly Shashi Tharoor wrote in his article- democracy should not be taken lightly. This is a valuable heritage, which is necessary to preserve continuously. The dissatisfaction of centralizing power, suppressing disagreement and bypassing the Constitution may come back in many forms.
Often such action is justified in the name of country interest or stability. In this sense, Emergency stands as a warning. The patrons of democracy will always have to be cautious.
June 23: Tharoor wrote-Modi’s energy property for India
On June 23, Tharoor wrote in an article published in The Hindu that Modi’s energy, dynamics and desire to join remain a major property for India on the global stage, but they should get more support.
Congress had told Tharoor’s personal opinion
The Hindu’s article was seen as a growing rift in his relations with Tharoor’s Congress party and his leadership. However, the Congress opposed Tharoor’s statement saying that this could be their personal opinion, not the whole party.
Kharge said- Modi first for some people
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge taunted Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on 25 June to praise PM Modi. He said, ‘I cannot read English, but Tharoor’s language is very good. We have made him a member of the party’s working committee. The entire opposition together said that we are with the army. The country is first for us, but for some people, Modi is first.
Tharoor gave clarification in Moscow on praise of Modi
While discussing with the media in Moscow, MP Shashi Tharoor said on praise of Operation Sindoor and PM Modi, “I made a statement on Modi’s energy because the Prime Minister himself has shown mobility and energy in the conversation with other countries. He has traveled to countries more than any Prime Minister and he has done this to take India’s message worldwide.”
Tharoor had said, “I have been believing for a long time that political differences in our democracy should stop on boundaries. For us, there is no such thing as BJP’s foreign policy or Congress’s foreign policy, only Indian foreign policy and Indian national interest.”
Congress claims- Modi government’s foreign policy completely failed
Tharoor has praised the Prime Minister at a time when the Congress is constantly attacking the Modi government on its foreign policy. The Congress alleges that the Indian diplomacy is shattering and the country is isolated globally.
Since the Pahalgam attack, Tharoor has been making comments on India-Pakistan conflict and diplomatic access which are different from the Congress’ stance. Congress spokesperson Supriya Srinet claimed that issuing advisory on behalf of the Trump government for those visiting India defames the country.
The Congress had demanded that the government should register a protest on this and take a tough stand. The Congress claimed that the Modi government’s foreign policy has completely failed.
