According to an earlier report in The Globe, the PM’s advisors are deliberating on who should be made the Prime Minister of Canada after Liberal Party Trudeau and what process should be adopted. Once Trudeau announces his resignation, the Liberal Party will have two options. First of all, they should unanimously choose an interim leader who will take charge of the country. The second option would be to hold elections within the party for the leadership of the country.

Trudeau has reportedly discussed with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc whether he would be willing to take on the role of interim leader and prime minister, The Globe reports. However, if Leblanc contests the elections, it may not be possible for him to continue as interim Prime Minister.

Canadian media is claiming about some more names that if Trudeau resigns, these faces can be contenders for the post of Prime Minister. The first name in this is that of Mark Carney. He is a former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. According to Canadian media reports, he is considering contesting for the post of leader of the Liberal Party. Apart from this, there is another name which is being discussed a lot, that is Chrystia Freeland.

Cristia came into the spotlight around the world when she resigned from the post of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister on 16 December 2024. After this resignation, a flood of troubles fell upon Justin Trudeau. Cristea is also being considered as a possible contender for the post of Prime Minister. It is being said that she has been trying to bring MPs to her side for some time. Apart from this, Melanie Jolie is also considered a strong contender. She is Canada’s top diplomat since 2021.

Where did things go wrong for Justin Trudeau?

Justin Trudeau has been holding the post of Prime Minister of Canada since 2015. In the year 2023, Canada started a diplomatic war against India on the foreign front. During this, Canada accused India that Indian agents were involved in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. After this, Canada’s relations with India went into cold storage.

Justin Trudeau was trying to hide the challenges on the domestic front through diplomatic battle with India but the opposition leaders exposed him. The opposition leader had told Trudeau that if there are any allegations against India, he should present the evidence directly, otherwise he should not create such a ‘pretense’ to hide domestic failures. After this, Justice Trudeau’s problems increased when after winning the US elections, Donald Trump had said that if no progress was made in securing the common border between the two countries, then he would impose a 25% ban on all the products of the two neighboring countries, Canada and Mexico. Will increase the percentage tariff (import duty).

After Trump’s announcement, the then Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Justin Trudeau government, Chrystia Freeland, had announced her resignation from her post and said that trade between America and Canada is on a large scale and if America attacks Canada, If a tariff of 25 percent is imposed, it will break the back of the country’s economy. Regarding Justin Trudeau, Chrystia Freeland had said that instead of improving the fiscal condition of the country, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is "to do costly politics" We are doing something which the country cannot tolerate.

Jagmeet Singh left Trudeau in the lurch

Justin Trudeau’s government is in minority, his government has the support of the New Democratic Party (NDP). In September and December last year, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh had said that he would bring a no-confidence motion against the Canadian PM. Jagmeet Singh’s party has been supporting Trudeau’s minority government in exchange for a common political agenda. But last year, the gap in political relations between Trudeau and the NDP deepened when the Canadian government’s cabinet took strict action against the closure of the country’s two major railways. With this decision, the NDP became angry and the situation kept getting worse for Trudeau.
