‘Thank you ASG Raju, otherwise today we on ED …’, Why did CJI Gawai get angry at the ED in the hearing of Siddaramaiah’s wife?

‘Thank you ASG Raju, otherwise today we on ED …’, Why did CJI Gawai get angry at the ED in the hearing of Siddaramaiah’s wife?

The Supreme Court on Monday (July 21, 2025) reprimanded the Enforcement Directorate and said that efforts should not be made to fight a political battle through legal proceedings. The court has expressed displeasure over the objection of the ED over the cancellation of money laundering case against the wife of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The ED challenged the Karnataka High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court, but during this time Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai became very angry. Then the Additional Solicitor General SV Raju argued on behalf of the ED and thanked him that you saved us from making harsh comments on ED.

This case is related to money refinement in Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). The Karnataka High Court on 7 March canceled the money laundering case against Siddaramaiah’s wife BM Parvati and Karnataka Urban Development Minister Bayerthi Suresh. The High Court upheld the trial court order and ruled here, which the ED has challenged in the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Bhushan was hearing in the bench case of Ramakrishna Gavai. CJI BR Gawai told the ED, ‘You are well aware that the High Court has upheld the trial court’s decision. Why are you being used in political fight? ‘

Justice Gawai further said, ‘Unfortunately, there have been some such experiences with my ED in Maharashtra. Please do not force us to say anything, otherwise we have to say something very rigid about the ED.

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appeared on behalf of ED. After the Supreme Court’s remarks, he said to withdraw the appeal. CJI Gawai said on this, we do not see any error in the single judge’s perspective, so we reject ED’s appeal. CJI Gavai said, “We should thank ASG Raju that he saved us from making harsh comments.”
