The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of suicide of BDS student at Sharda University in Greater Noida. Along with this, the court has also sought information on the suicide of a student of mechanical engineering in IIT, Kharagpur. The court has said that if there is a delay in registering an FIR in these cases, then it will start contempt proceedings against the people concerned.
A bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan appointed senior advocate Aparna Bhatt as Amicus Curie and asked to report on both cases. The judges have expressed concern that there is some mess in our educational institutions. On Friday, July 18, both students committed suicide. Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student Jyoti and BTech student of IIT, Kharagpur, Retam Mandal, were found dead in their respective rooms. The Supreme Court has said to hear the case on Monday, July 29.
Keep in mind that on March 24 this year, the Supreme Court ordered all the states to file an FIR immediately in the case of suicide of students. The court also formed a National Task Force to report on the mental state of students who committed suicide under pressure from education.
