The monsoon session of Parliament has started on Monday (July 21). At the beginning of the session, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned and surprised everyone. He left the post citing health reasons. The tenure of Vice President Dhankhar was very much discussed. He is known because of his vocal personality, but he was also in controversy due to many statements.
Dhankhar made a statement in January 2023 in the context of recurrence of the original structure theory of the Supreme Court. There was a lot of controversy about this. They said, ,If the court stops the laws made by Parliament, then it is a threat to democracy., The opposition surrounded the central government regarding this statement. The opposition said that this is an interference in the independence of the judiciary.
When Dhankhar made a statement about student politics
He made a statement on educational institutions and student politics in March 2023. Dhankhar had said that some universities have become the base of anti -national ideology. His statement was deemed a gesture to JNU and some other central universities.
What Dhankhar said about the opposition
Dhankhar lashed out at the opposition on many issues, from disruption in the Rajya Sabha to the passage of the bill without discussion. He specifically targeted the top lawyers who are also a Rajya Sabha member representing opposition parties, especially the Congress.
Jagdeep Dhankhar strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act, which tried to reverse the collegium system for appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and High Court.
Dhankhar questioned the apex court to cancel the law passed by both houses in the presence of the then Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. He also criticized the MPs and said that when the law was canceled, not even a single voice of protest was emerged from the MPs.
