Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Sunday that after the 1999 Karnataka assembly elections, the party high command did not give him his right. At that time SM Krishna was made the Chief Minister, while he joined the Congress just four months ago.

Kharge said that his hopes of reaching the top chair of the state were shocked at that time. He worked hard for five years as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), but all the hard work went in vain.

Addressing a program in Vijaypura, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Kharge said, ‘I became a CLP leader, worked hard to bring the party to power. Finally our government was also formed, but SM Krishna became the Chief Minister, who came to the Congress only four months before that time.

He further said, ‘All our hard work went waste. I worked hard for five years, and he (Krishna) came only four months ago and became the Chief Minister. Kharge said that this has happened many times before, but it would not be appropriate to talk about all these things together.

Kharge was a minister in that government and the subsequent Congress governments. After this he was also the Railway Minister and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister.

Story of Kharge becoming Congress President

Mallikarjun Kharge defeated Shashi Tharoor in 2022 and became Congress President. In this election, he got 7,987 votes while Tharoor got only 1,072 votes, which made it clear that Kharge had strong support from the party high command and workers. More than 9,000 Congress representatives from across the country elected their president through voting on 17 October.

Kharge became the first non-Gandhi president of the Congress in the last 24 years. Under his leadership, the Congress won 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which increased by about 50 seats as compared to 2019. However, under his chairmanship, the party lost the assembly elections of major states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Maharashtra.
