At Dharna Chowk in Hyderabad, the BJP organized a big demonstration demanding 42 percent reservation for the Backward Class (BC). Telangana BJP President N. Ramchander Rao, Union Minister of Coal and Mining G. Kishan Reddy, senior leader Etala Rajendra and several BC leaders attended. The protesters demand that net reservation be implemented without including the Muslim community in BC reservation.
The BJP accused the Congress government of not being serious about BC reservation and making it a political drama. Telangana BJP President Ramchander Rao said that the Congress had promised 42 percent reservation to the BC community, but now they are trying to give 10 percent of it to the Muslim community. This is a deception of the BC community.
‘Congress trying to discredit Center and BJP’
He said that if the Congress really worries about BC interests, then it should cancel the Muslim quota immediately. He claimed that the Congress is trying to discredit the Center and the BJP through a proposed dharna on August 6 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
What did Union Minister Reddy say?
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy said, “We are not against BC reservation, but strongly oppose religion based reservation. The BC community should get their rights, without any political intervention.” BJP leaders alleged that the Congress policy is to weaken the interests of the BC community and do vote bank politics.
This demonstration deepens the political dispute over BC reservation in Telangana. The BJP clarified that it supports constitutionally valid reservation for the BC community, but will not accept religion -based quota.
