Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren died at the age of 81 after a long illness. His political life has also been very upheaval. When Shibu Soren became a minister in the Manmohan Singh government at the Center in 2004, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him in a 30-year-old case, after which he had to be underground. That case was the Chirudih massacre of 1975.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was a part of the UPA led by the Congress in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. When the UPA wins, Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister and he included the cabinet in 2004 as the coal minister. However, Shibu Soren could not remain the Minister of Coal for a long time. A few days after his oath, the Chirudih massacre of 1975 came to light. In this case, the court made a non -bailable warrant, then he became underground and he was not found anywhere. After which the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanded his resignation from Shibu Soren. However, when he was relieved from the court, Manmohan Singh again included him in the cabinet.

What was Chirudih massacre?

In 1975, Chirudih used to be held in Dumka district. There was a massacre in Chirudih, in which 11 people were killed. In fact, there were many violent incidents during Shibu Soren’s Jharkhand movement, one of which was the incident of Chirudih. Shibu Soren claimed that he was campaigning to get back the land of the poor. It is said that on one side the tribals were carrying arrows, while on the other side there were Mahajan who were shutdown. There was a violent clash between the two sides and there was screaming around. Later, the police somehow managed to control this violence. By then, 11 people including 9 Muslims had been killed. After this incident, Shibu Soren became very popular among the tribals.

Shibu Soren said the voice of the tribals

Shibu Soren is known for raising the voice of tribals. He led many movements like ‘Dhankatani Movement’ in the 1970s. Shibu Soren also played an important role in the movement to make a separate state ‘Jharkhand’ from Bihar. He became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times (2005, 2008, 2009), but could not complete his term even once.

Shibu Soren first contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1977, but had to face defeat. He got success in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections after that. After this, he also won elections in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1996. In 2004, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dumka.
