Colonel assault case in Punjab: Supreme Court expressed strict resentment, order for CBI inquiry against policemen intact

The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition of the policemen accused of assaulting the army colonel and his son in Patiala, Punjab. He challenged the Punjab-Haryana High Court’s decision of the CBI inquiry into the case, but the Supreme Court refused to intervene. The Supreme Court also reprimanded the petitioners for abuse from the military officer serving the country.

The case is on the night of 13 and 14 March 2025. Colonel Pushpadir Singh Bath of the army was having dinner with his son Angad at a dhaba. Meanwhile, there was a dispute over parking. After this, 12 policemen fiercely assaulted Colonel and his son. They made both of them half dead. After the assault, the policemen went away threatening to kill him in a fake encounter.

After this, this matter came into discussion in social media and media. Police registered an FIR 8 days after the incident, 12 policemen were also suspended. Sections 115 (2), 351 (2), 109, 310, 117 (1), 117 (2), 126 (2) and 190 of BNS have been imposed in the FIR registered on these. SIT was also formed for investigation, but its investigation was very slow. No accused was also arrested.

Dissatisfied with this, the Colonel went to the High Court. The High Court, while agreeing with him, reprimanded the SIT for loose investigation. The High Court also questioned the removal of the section of attempt to murder. After this, the High Court handed over the investigation to the CBI. Two accused in the case had reached the Supreme Court to challenge the order of Inspector Harjinder Singh Dhillon and Harry Boparai High Court, but the bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma dismissed their petition. The judges reprimanded him for his conduct and also warned him to impose heavy fine. However, the court did not impose a fine.
