Amit Shah has become India’s longest Union Home Minister on Tuesday. He has been in office for 2,258 days. Shah took over as the Home Minister on May 30, 2019 in the second term of the Modi government.

Shah completed the first term of the Home Minister on 9 June 2024. On June 10, 2024, he again became Home Minister and has been in this post since then. Apart from the Ministry of Home Affairs, he is also the first Cooperative Minister of the country. Earlier, Shah has been the National President of BJP and Home Minister of Gujarat.

He has broken the record of Lal Krishna Advani, veteran BJP leader, BJP leader, as Home Minister. Advani held the post of Home Minister of the country for a total of 2,256 days from March 19, 1998 to May 22, 2004. After Advani, Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant is the third person to be the longest home minister.

Modi broke Indira’s record, behind Nehru’s tenure in PM post

Earlier, Narendra Modi became the second PM to be the longest Prime Minister in India on 25 July. He has broken the record of 4077 days (24 January 1966 to 24 March 1977) of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. PM Modi completed 4078 days as Prime Minister on 25 July.

Jawaharlal Nehru holds the record for the longest Prime Minister being the longest Prime Minister. He held this post from 15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964 i.e. for a total of 6126 days. PM Modi is 2048 days behind Nehru’s record.

However, PM Modi has already equaled Nehru in terms of winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections (2014, 2019, 2024). If he becomes Prime Minister after winning the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, then the record of becoming PM can also break.

PM Modi is the longest elected leader Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. After this, he became Prime Minister from 26 May 2014. In this way, he has become the first Indian leader to handle the head of a chosen government in the state concentration (more than 24 years).

The news agency quoted a government official as saying that Modi is the only leader in India who won the party by leading the party in six consecutive elections. Gujarat assembly elections in 2002, 2007 and 2012, and in Lok Sabha elections 2014, 2019 and 2024.
