Two trains coming from Rameswaram have been trapped for more than three hours due to technical fault on the new Pamban Rail Bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. In this, Madurai Passenger and other super fast train is stuck on this bridge. Inspection and repair work continues to restore general service.

This new Pambon Bridge to connect Rameswaram with railway connectivity is India’s first vertical lift Railway Sea Bridge. Which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 6 April 2025 on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami this year. The length of this new Pamban Bridge is 2.07 km, which is located on the Palkal Strait in the Pambon area of Tamil Nadu.
Development took place keeping in mind the facility of rail traffic and seafood
After the old Pamban Bridge was dilapidated, the Central Government prepared India’s first vertical lift Railway C Bridge keeping in mind the facilitated facility of railways and keeping in mind the easy transport of maritime shipping. So that large cargo ships do not have to face any kind of problem in going by sea route and maritime traffic and business will benefit.
Bridge lift can be raised vertically up to 17 meters
This new Pamban Bridge has a 72.5 meter long span, which can be raised up to 17 meters, so that large ships can get a way to pass easily. At the same time, the height of this bridge is 3 meters from the sea.
Many strong materials including stainless steel have been used in the construction of this bridge and special paint has also been used to protect it from rust.
The first Pamban Bridge was built in 1914
It is noteworthy that the first Pambon Marine Railway Bridge to connect Rameswaram with the mainland of Tamil Nadu was built in 1914 in the year 1914 of India’s independence. There was a railway track in the old Pamban bridge, which provided the facility of going to the same train from the old bridge at a time. This new and India’s first vertical lift Railway C Bridge, called the new Pamban Bridge, is designed in such a way that two tracks of rail can be accommodated in it. However, at this time there is only one railway track on this bridge.
