The Supreme Court has recently directed to remove stray dogs permanently from the roads of Delhi. After the order, a sentence is going on a lot on social media, ‘If you like, take it home.’ But I had done this seven years ago. Here I am sharing my tragedy
In the year 2018, a dog appeared in my society complex in East Delhi, a dog appeared like a very weak, sick and skeletal. On seeing him, I started giving water and food. In the initial days, the angry eyes of the neighbors ignored, but soon saw that his water utensils were being reversed and people asked the guard to drive him away with the stick. I understood that he will not be safe here.
I took him home. Today Broni is my family. Yes, it was not easy to raise him with alone and uncertain time, but it was difficult to leave him to die on the streets. Earlier, in Kolkata, I adopted two Indie (desi breed) dogs- Alex and Kalu. Both also forced the circumstances to bring home, because neither NGO had a place nor trust in the government shelter.
Desi vs. foreign breed discrimination
Those who claim to be a lover of dogs often show discrimination about the breed. Many people love Indie puppies on the streets, put videos on social media, but want a golden retriever or labrador at home. But the truth is that Indie is equally intelligent, clean and trainable. After bringing the brownie by the road, I have never seen dirt in the house. He quickly got into a domestic environment and today he is a disciplined, sensible companion.
Love vs ground reality
Is it easy to raise pets in India? My answer is no. Many problems have to be faced in such circumstances. I am telling some of them here.
Finding home: Many landlords do not give homes on rent to pets, especially Indi, keeping.
transportation: The stomach cabs are expensive, and normal taxi drivers refuse to take the pet.
Long distance travel: There is strict rules and high expenses in traveling with pet by train or flight.
Shelter status: Most government or private shelters look good on social media, it is not in reality. Once I left the brownie in the shelter and when he returned, he was ill with the tick fever.
The Supreme Court has given orders in view of public safety, but questions are also raised on ground reality and lack of resources. Whether you like Indie dogs or not, but it is necessary for them to have some condolences. One day they disappeared from the streets, so will you remember them as just ‘rabies spreading’? Probably not. Thinking and watching
