Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday formally invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the BRICS summit to be held in India in 2026. According to the information issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea), President Xi Jinping admitted the invitation and assured to give full support to India’s upcoming BRICS chairmanship.
In fact, India will handle BRICS from Brazil next year and will organize the summit of this organization in 2026. This step has been taken at a time when India is trying to strengthen the voice of Global South and to mold the group into a new form.
Modi-she met and discussion on SCO
Let us know that during the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference in Tianjin, China, many important issues were discussed in the meeting of the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi expressed support for organizing China’s SCO and organizing the Tianjin conference. He also said that peace and stability in border areas are very important to improve relations between India and China.
Referring to the ‘disagging’ process in some disputed areas on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) last year, PM Modi called it a positive step and expressed confidence that peace will remain on the border.
BRICS Agenda of India
At the BRICS summit held at Rio de Janeiro earlier this year, Prime Minister Modi announced that India will mold the organization in a new form during its chairmanship. He proposed a new meaning for BRICS- Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability (Capacity building and innovation for cooperation and stability).
PM Modi emphasized that the BRICS headed by India will be completely people and will carry forward the priorities of Global South. This is the same approach that India adopted during the G20 chairmanship.
Growing role in Global South
The theme of the Rio conference was “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a more inclusive and sustainable governance”. It agreed to shared commitments in areas such as Finance, Health, Climate, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Shanti-Safety.
Currently, the BRICS has expanded to 11 member countries- Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran. This group is now emerging as a strong platform for the coordination of Global South. Experts believe that the 2026 BRICS conference will be an important opportunity for India to strengthen its global leadership capacity and strategic balance in Asia.
