Sikkim Government issues advisory for HMPV Virus outbreak and prevention measures

Sikkim Government Issues Advisory: Keeping in mind the reports of increase in cases of this disease caused by Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, the Sikkim Government has issued an advisory to closely monitor the situation. Considering the seriousness of the infection caused by this virus, the state government has directed the health department to pay special attention to it.

Sikkim shares about 200 km long border with China, due to which there is a possibility of the virus spreading to India. This area is also surrounded by Tibet Autonomous Region. The Chief Secretary recently held a meeting with the Department of Health and Family Welfare to assess the virus situation and the preparedness of the state. Officials discussed the mode of infection and symptoms of the virus.

There is no serious threat of HMPV in India

Health department officials informed that at present the virus is not causing any serious outbreak in India. However, steps have been taken to continuously monitor the situation. There is no need for people to panic, as it is clear from the available data that there is no unusual trend in the cases of HMPV. Meanwhile, government officials have appealed to the public to adopt preventive measures.

How does HMPV virus spread?

HMPV was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001 and since then the virus has spread to different parts of the world. This virus causes respiratory diseases, but it can be serious for people with weak immunity. HMPV can spread through an infected person’s cough, sneeze, handshake, or contact with contaminated surfaces. Its common symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat and difficulty in breathing.

The official said that the government has decided to run an awareness campaign on washing hands with soap and water and taking precautions while coughing and sneezing. Apart from this, regular cleaning of contaminated surfaces and avoiding close contact with persons showing symptoms of respiratory illness has been advised. The Health Department has taken important steps in this regard and is continuously working towards increasing public awareness.
