Sonam Wangchuk was arrested from Leh and taken to Delhi first. From there, he was brought to Jodhpur under special arrangements.

Ladakh’s social activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by the police on Friday afternoon from his village Uliakatopo. He was airlifted and sent to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan. The National Security Act (NSA) has been implemented on Wangchuk, under which it can be kept in custody for a long time without bail.

The government blamed Wangchuk as responsible for the violence in Leh on 24 September. 4 youths were killed and 80 people were injured in this violence, including 40 policemen. So far 60 people have been arrested.

The situation in Leh is still tense. Curfew is imposed on the fourth consecutive day and schools and colleges are closed. Precautionary administration has also stopped mobile internet service. The protesters demand that Ladakh get full state status and it should be included in the sixth schedule of the Constitution.

The BJP office was burnt by protesters in Leh violence. CRPF car was set on fire.

Police arrested before press conference

On Friday, the incident suddenly changed and social activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by the police before the press conference at 2:30 pm. When they did not reach Leh, the organizers suspected. Later news of arrest was received. Despite this, there was a press conference. The organizers admitted that the violence took place to the youth who had become ‘out of control’, but there is no foreign force in it.

Leh Apex Body (Lab) co-chairman Chering Dorje made serious allegations. He said that the police and CRPF neither used water showers nor fired bullets for warning, but directly fired indiscriminately.

Wangchuk was expected to arrest in advance

Sonam Wangchuk already feared that the government could arrest her. A day earlier, he said that “I will be happy if I have to be arrested on this issue.” But now his arrest can spoil the atmosphere rather than calm. It is believed that this may also affect the conversation between the representatives of Ladakh and the central government.

Wangchuk has been a big face of Ladakh’s rights to fight for the last five years. His arrest has hurt people’s sentiments. Local people believe that Wangchuk is not a person who provokes violence, but was leading the peaceful movement.
