Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar hosted a meeting of Foreign Ministers in New York on Saturday in New York, in which he highlighted an important role in promoting the multilateralism and creative international participation of the group. In this meeting organized on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly, Jaishankar stressed the need for solidarity and reforms of BRICS amid global challenges.

Jaishankar said in his address, “When multilateralism is under stress, BRICS has maintained its position as a strong voice of logic and creative change.” He emphasized the need to strengthen the principles of peace building, dialogue, diplomacy and international law in a disturbed global environment. In his X post, he wrote, ‘In a turbulent world, BRICS should further strengthen the message of peace -making, dialogue, diplomacy and international law.’

Empty on UN improvement

Speaking on institutional reforms, Jaishankar said, “BRICS should intensify the collective demand for comprehensive reforms in the major organs of the United Nations, especially the Security Council.” This statement reflects the long -standing demand of BRICS countries, which advocates more representative and effective global rule.

Addressing economic challenges, Jaishankar said that increasing protectionism, tariff instability and non-tariff barriers are affecting trade flow. He insisted, ‘BRICS should defend the multilateral trade system.’ In addition, he described technology and innovation as defines the next phase of BRICS cooperation.

Chairmanship of india

Underlining India’s priorities as the current Chairman of BRICS, Jaishankar said, “India will focus on sustainable development through food and energy security, climate change and digital changes, startups, innovation and strong development partnership.” This agenda reflects India’s support for global South.

Meeting with IBSA ministers

Jaishankar held a “spectacular meeting” of foreign ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) in New York. He wrote on X, ‘IBSA made a strong demand for transformational reforms in the United Nations Security Council.’ IBSA Academic Forum, Maritime Practice, Trust Fund and Inter-IBSA trade were also discussed in the meeting. He said that IBSA will continue to hold meetings again and again.

Co-chairmanship with celac

Jaishankar also co-existed the meeting of Foreign Ministers with India-CELAC (Latin American and Caribbean states) with Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavisanso of Columbia. Both agreed to strengthen widespread cooperation in areas like agriculture, trade, health and digital.

India and CELAC also agreed to detect emerging areas such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), Technology, Important Minerals, Space and Renewable. Both sides agreed to the need for immediate improvement in multilateral institutions to better represent the voice of global South.

On the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly, Jaishankar had bilateral meetings with several counterparts, including Indonesia Foreign Minister Sugiono, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov, Antigua and Barbuda Foreign Minister Paul Chet Green, Uruguay Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin and Columbia Foreign Minister Rosa Yalanda Village.
