A good news is coming out for Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The government is considering extending the tenure of permanent committees of Parliament from one year to two years. If this decision is applicable, then Tharoor can remain the chairman of two years and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs.
Why can tenure be extended?
Right now the term of permanent committees ends every year and restructuring is done every time. The continuation of the functioning of the committees is broken by joining new members. For this reason, the opposition was demanding to extend the tenure for a long time. He says that this will make it possible to review the Bills, reports and policies. Now the government is taking this suggestion seriously and there is a possibility that this time the tenure of the committees should be reduced to two years.
How will Tharoor benefit?
Shashi Tharoor was made the chairman of the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs on 26 September last year. But their relationship within the party is not going well. If the tenure increases, they will be able to stay in this post for two years without any change. This step can prove to be a politically big support for them and they will get a chance to strengthen their grip within the party.
How many committees are there in Parliament?
There are currently 24 permanent committees in Parliament. Each committee consists of 31 members, out of which 21 are from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha. These committees monitor the budget, policies and functioning of the concerned ministries and departments. His Speaker is nominated by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The work of the committees is not limited to monitoring, but also prepares a detailed report on the bills which affects the decisions of Parliament.
