36 people, including women and children, died due to a stampede during the election rally of Tamilga Vatri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Saturday in Karur, Tamil Nadu. When Vijay was addressing the rally, the crowd grew and became uncontrollable. Many people, including TV workers and some children, fell unconscious.

TV workers made a noise when the health of the people deteriorated due to the huge crowd. Vijay also went to its attention and he stopped his speech. He was standing on top of the campaign bus and threw water bottles towards the workers. The ambulance had to struggle a lot to reach the spot via crowded road.

Vijay was heard requesting his workers to make way for ambulances. Meanwhile, news came to Vijay that a 9 -year -old girl had disappeared in the crowd. Vijay appealed to the police to help in finding the girl. The unconscious people were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

Karur’s DMK MLA Senthil Balaji said that 46 people injured in the stampede have been admitted to private hospitals and 12 people have been admitted to government hospitals. The condition of some of these remains critical and the death toll may increase. Senthil Balaji and Karur District Collector visited hospitals to take stock of the situation.

The pictures and videos of Vijay’s Karur rally have come out on social media, in which thousands of people are seen filled with chickping in very few places on both sides of the road, while Vijay’s campaign is just passing through the middle. When Vijay was addressing the rally, the crowd also increased. People started fainting due to heat, humidity and suffocation. On seeing this, the crowd became uncontrollable and a stampede occurred.

Senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh have expressed grief over the incident. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that he has directed immediate medical assistance for the victims. Local DMK MLA Senthil Balaji said that the death of 36 people has been confirmed, 46 people injured in the stampede have been admitted to private hospitals and 12 injured for treatment in government hospitals.
