The Assam Police has launched a separate investigation against Shyamakanu Mahant, an accused in the case of the death of singer Zubin Garg (manager of the company organizing the program), to acquire property through his alleged involvement and money laundering in organized financial crimes against Shyamkanu Mahant. This information was received from official documents.
Shyamakunu is the younger brother of former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant, who is currently the Chief Information Commissioner of Assam State Information Commission. Another of his elder brother Nani Gopal Mahant was the education advisor of Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma before becoming Vice Chancellor of Guwahati University.
Many PAN cards, seals and documents seized
The documents have revealed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) seized the bundles of documents and other things that indicated to ‘indicating’ crime ‘from Shyamakunu’s house on Thursday and Friday. The seized things include many PAN cards in the name of the same company, about 30 seals of various companies and government officials and documents related to several benami properties.
After the search, CID senior SP Ashif Ahmed lodged a detailed FIR, a copy of which is available with ‘PTI’. All seizures are mentioned in this FIR and requested to attach and free all his properties for a separate investigation into the alleged financial irregularities of Mahant.
Case registered under several sections
After receiving the complaint, the CID headquarters registered a case under several sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) on Saturday (September 27, 2025) and appointed Additional SP Morami Das as the investigating officer. CID is currently investigating Garg’s death, as more than 60 FIRs have been registered across the state.
Mahant is the main organizer of the Northeast India Festival in Singapore, where the singers went to perform. Apart from this, an FIR has also been lodged against about 10 other people, including the manager of the singer Siddharth Sharma. Subsequently, the CID headquarters registered a case and started a separate investigation.
Nine-member special investigation team formed for investigation
DGP Harmeet Singh on Wednesday formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate Garg’s untimely death. Garg died on September 19 while floating in the sea in Singapore. He went to Singapore to participate in the fourth East India Festival organized by the Mahant’s company.
