Chautala Family threatens Haryana politics …
- Devi Lal was involved in the freedom struggle: Chaudhary Devi Lal’s family lives at the center of politics of Haryana. Members of this family have been part of Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) to Congress and BJP. Born in Tejakheda village in Hisar district, Devi Lal attended the freedom struggle at the age of 15. In 1938 he became part of the Congress. In 1942, during the ‘Quit India’ movement, he had to stay in jail for about two years. Devi Lal was the Deputy Prime Minister of the country and became the Chief Minister of Haryana twice. His son Omprakash Chautala also became the Chief Minister of Haryana. Dushyant Chautala, who came from the fourth generation, was the deputy CM.
- Omprakash gets political legacy: The 5 children of Devi Lal were four sons Omprakash Chautala, Pratap Chautala, Ranjit Singh and Jagdish Chautala. When Devi Lal became deputy PM, elder son Omprakash Chautala took political legacy and became the Chief Minister of Haryana. Omprakash was the Chief Minister from 1989 to 1991. The Lok Sabha elections were lost in 1991 and his political journey ended from here. In 1999, Omprakash Chautala formed the government in Haryana with the help of BJP. By 2005, he became the CM of Haryana. Devi Lal died in 2001. Omprakash was the CM of Haryana four times.
- Ranjit stayed in Congress, but could not win elections : Omprakash’s leadership led to differences in the family and Ranjit took a different path. Ranjit stayed in Congress for a long time. As long as he stayed in Congress, he could not win elections. If the Congress did not get a ticket in 2019, then the queens fought independents from the seat and won. Just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, joined the BJP and were made ministers. After that the BJP gave ticket from Hisar seat in the Lok Sabha elections and he lost.
Why Om Prakash was sent to jail Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala were accused of illegally recruiting more than three thousand teachers through fake documents in the state with the help of a government official. The CBI investigated the case and filed a charge sheet against him.
The CBI Special Court sentenced Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala to 10 years in February 2013. He was jailed for about nine and a half years. After that the Delhi government gave six months exemption in addition to regular discounts in the sentence of 10 years convicted prisoners. After which the way of coming out of Chautala was cleared. While Chautala stayed in jail, he got discord in his family and separated from INLD, his grandson Dushyant Chautala formed Jannayak Janata Party (JJP).
Family divided into two camps At present, the Chautala family is divided into two camps. At present, many grandchildren and grandchildren of Devi Lal are active in many parties in Haryana politics. Ajay Chautala, elder son of Om Prakash Chautala, has separated from the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and formed a Jannayak Janata Party.
While INLD is commanded by Om Prakash Chautala and his younger son Abhay Chautala. Ajay Chautala is inherited by both his sons Dushyant Chautala and Digvijay Chautala. Both INLD and JJP parties are struggling to preserve their existence.
