The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived all the fees for compulsory biometric updates of the Aadhaar of 7-15 years of age. UIDAI said on Saturday that the fee waiver has come into effect from October 1. It will remain in force for one year.

Six crore children are expected to benefit from this step. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, biometric updates in Aadhaar will make children’s education, scholarship and direct benefit transfer (DBT) schemes easier.

In fact, fingerprints and iris biometrics are not taken for the Aadhaar enrollment of children under five years of age as they do not mature till that age. According to the current rules, the Aadhaar update of children’s fingerprints, iris and photographs is mandatory after the age of five.
