Azamgarh has been the tapobhoomi of the sages for centuries. Among its most revered sites, Durvasa Rishi Ashram is located at the confluence of Tamsa and Manjusha rivers. Even today, a fair is held every year, in which thousands of devotees come. Now this ashram is ready for a new chapter. The Uttar Pradesh government has approved its development under the ‘Mukhyamantri Tourism Development Scheme’. ₹ 1 crore has been approved for this project.
Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jayveer Singh said that this project will strengthen Purvanchal on the tourism map and create opportunities for local communities. He said, ‘Development of Durvasa Rishi Ashram will give the devotees experience convenience and spirituality, as well as promote the regional economy.’ Please tell that in the ancient Tapobhoomi Aajamgarh of the sages, Durvasa, Dattatreya and the moon are the ashram of the sage.
Durvasa Rishi meditated here for years
Durvasa Ashram has special significance, where it is believed that Durvasa Rishi came from Chitrakoot at the age of 12 and meditated for years. This place has been the center of devotion since the Satyuga, Treta and Dwapara Yuga. At the three -day fair on every Kartik Purnima, devotees from many states come here for a holy bath in the confluence of Tamsa and Manjusha rivers. This ashram will be beautified under the Vikas Ri Yojana. There will be a provision of light, the availability of cleanliness and drinking water will be ensured and information center will be set up.

Tourism is growing rapidly in Azamgarh
These facilities will make the ashram more attractive for pilgrims, as well as preserving its historical heritage. Tourism is growing rapidly in Azamgarh. More than 15.8 lakh tourists came here in 2024, and more than 3.25 lakh tourists have reached the first quarter of 2025. This is strengthening the local economy and employment opportunities are increasing. Moon Muni Ashram, Dattatreya Temple, Bhawan Nath Temple, Avantikapuri Dham, Naga Baba Sarovar, Mehanagar Fort and Nizamabad temples located in the district are also attracting tourists.
Tourism Minister Jayveer Singh said, ‘Uttar Pradesh is a pioneer in religious tourism today. As part of the 2022 tourism policy, we are developing spiritual and historical sites. Along with strengthening world famous places, less famous historical sites like Durvasa Ashram are being brought into the mainstream, so that every part of the state can contribute to our cultural identity and global tourism.
