Heavy devastation due to rain and landslides in Darjeeling, death of many people; PM Modi expressed grief


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of life due to heavy rains and landslides in Darjeeling of West Bengal. He assured that the central government is committed to provide all possible assistance to the affected people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ on Sunday (October 05, 2025), ‘I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property in a bridge accident in Darjeeling. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I wish the injured to get well soon.

Strict eye on the situation of Darjeeling areas

He further wrote, ‘In view of heavy rains and landslides, the situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas is being closely monitored. We are committed to provide all possible help to the affected people. Earlier, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Legislative Assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari requested the Bengal government to speed up rescue work and provide relief to the affected people soon.

He told the social media platform ‘X’ that Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the hilly areas of Kursiang have been badly affected due to continuous heavy rains in North Bengal. Communication and transport connectivity from the plains of Siliguri, Terai and Duars have been almost completely disrupted due to landslides and floods. The iron bridge over the Balasan river in Dudhia connecting Siliguri and Mirik has collapsed.

‘People facing difficulties without services’

Suvendu official said that thousands of residents are stranded and are facing difficulties without necessary supply and services. There are also reports of casualties, whose details are not yet known. He wrote in the post, ‘I urge the Chief Secretary of West Bengal to collect resources immediately and make adequate arrangements for early restoration of communication network in these areas.’

He wrote, ‘In addition, the distribution of relief materials including food, water, medicines and temporary shelters should be given priority to help the troubled people, so that this crisis can be prevented from increasing further. The safety and welfare of our fellow citizens should be paramount in North Bengal.

Infrastructure damaged in Darjeeling

BJP MP from Darjeeling Raju Bista said that I have been very sad to know about the heavy losses caused by extremely heavy rains in many parts. He said that there have been deaths, property damage has been done and infrastructure has also been damaged. The BJP MP said that they are taking stock of the situation and are in touch with the officials concerned. He also appealed to BJP workers to help the affected people.
