Sanjay roy case: The Calcutta High Court on Friday (7 February 2025) accepted the CBI’s appeal against the sentence of life imprisonment to Sanjay Roy, convicted in the medical college rape and murder case. The CBI challenged the trial court’s decision and demanded the death sentence for the convict.

In this case, the West Bengal government had also filed an appeal in the High Court, demanding that Sanjay Roy’s sentence was demanded further. However, a bench of Justices Debangsu Basak and Mohammad Sabbar Rashidi rejected the state government’s appeal for hearing. The court said that since the CBI had investigated the case, only the appeal of the CBI will be heard.

What is the whole matter?

This case is of 9 August 2024 when an on-duty medical staff was raped and murdered in RG by RG. This heinous crime created resentment in the entire state. After investigation, the police arrested the accused Sanjay Roy and later the case was handed over to the CBI. The trial court convicted Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment, but the CBI was not satisfied with the sentence and reached the High Court demanding the death penalty.

CBI asked for Sanjay Roy hanged

Now the CBI’s appeal will be heard in the High Court, where the agency will demand the death penalty to Sanjay Roy. At the same time, after the appeal of the state government was rejected, it now has the option left to go to the Supreme Court. Everyone’s eyes are fixed on the next hearing of this case where it will be decided whether the convict will get a severe punishment or not.
