Ott guidelines: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has issued a fresh guideline to the OTT platforms on social media about the controversy over pornographic comedy, in which strictly adherence to content rules and avoiding publishing porn, pornographic or pornographic content Has been urged.

The ministry said that it has received many complaints from Members of Parliament, statutory bodies and public about concerns about unfair materials on digital platforms.

According to the Information Technology (IT) rules, the OTT service has been stopped from distributing restricted content and they have to apply age-based classifications for their programming. It has also been made mandatory in the rules that ensure compliance with self-control body guidelines overseeing these platforms.

On behalf of MIB, it was said, ‘It is advisable that the OTT platform should follow the individual provisions of the laws applied while publishing the content on its platform and the code of conduct prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021, in which prescribed under the Code of Conduct Strict adherence to the age-based classification of the material is involved. In addition, the self-control bodies of the OTT platform are requested to take proper active action from the platform to violate the code of conduct.

It states that along with other things in the Code of Conduct, OTT platforms are expected not to propagate any content banned legally. Also, based on the general guidelines given in the schedule of rules, the age-based classification of the material should be done as well as use proper precautions and discretion.

This consultation has been issued by the Supreme Court in view of the suggestion to regulate the material on the social media forum. The Supreme Court underlined the lack of provision in the law in the case of sharing content on a platform like YouTube.
