Mahashivaratri is the day of Shivling’s appearance, not Shiva marriage
There is a belief about Mahashivaratri that Shiva-Parvati was married on this day, but there is no mention of this in any book including Shiva Purana.
It is written in the Shiva Purana that the Shivalinga appeared for the first time on the fourteenth day of the Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month i.e. Chaturdashi Tithi. Then Lord Vishnu and Brahma ji worshiped Shivalinga. This day was called Shivaratri.
It is written in the 35th chapter of Shiva Purana that Shiva was married on the second day of Krishna Paksha of Aghan month. This date will come on 7 November this year.
There is no written information about when the tradition of celebrating Shiva marriage on Shivaratri. Scholars of Kashi and Ujjain say that Parvati also has a place in the lower part of the Shivling.
Mahadev is worshiped at night on Shivaratri. Shiva worship remains incomplete without Parvati, so this night Shiva-Shakti began to be celebrated as a festival of union.
