There has been a long -standing dispute between the South states and the central government over the Tri Language Policy. The dispute increased further after the New Education Policy was implemented in 2019. Under the new education policy, students of every state will have to learn three languages, one of which will be Hindi.
There is a lot of opposition to this in Tamil Nadu. In the state, the existing government workers have been sooty vessels on names written by Hindi.

Controversy increased after the implementation of New Education Policy

BJP will promote TRAI language in 2026 assembly elections
Meanwhile, the BJP has intensified the campaign to promote TRAI language in the state. The BJP is preparing to launch the campaign from March 1 in the next year’s Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
The new campaign will begin under the supervision of Annamalai, head of the party’s state unit head before the 2026 assembly elections. He has accused DMK of being adamant on the old 1960 policy.
This move of BJP is being seen as an attempt to establish a foot in the political scenario in Tamil Nadu. The party has not succeeded in the elections held so far.
BJP contested all 234 seats in the state in the assembly elections 2016, but could not win a single seat. At the same time, in the 2021 assembly elections, he contested 20 seats, with which he managed to win 4 seats. However, in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP did not open any account in the state.
What is a new education policy, which is being disputed Under NEP 2020, students must learn 3 languages, but no language has been made mandatory. States and schools have the freedom to decide which 3 languages they want to teach.
It has been recommended to study in primary classes (class 1 to 5) in mother tongue or local language. At the same time, it is mandatory to study 3 languages in middle classes (class 6 to 10). It will be English or a modern Indian language in a non-Hindi speaking state. If the second and 12th school wants to give foreign language as an alternative.
Hindi second language among non-Hindi speaking states
The emphasis is on studying classes up to 5th and where possible in the mother tongue, local or regional language. At the same time, Hindi can be taught as a second language in non-Hindi speaking states. Also, in Hindi speaking states, there may be another Indian language (eg Tamil, Bengali, Telugu etc.) as a second language.
It is not mandatory to adopt a language
States and schools have the freedom to decide which three languages they will teach. There is no provision to impose any language compulsorily.
