The government on Wednesday responded in Parliament over allegations of collecting different fare from iPhone and Android users on cab companies like Ola and Uber. Minister of State for Consumer Affairs Prahlad Joshi said that the matter has been taken seriously and investigation has been started.
In fact, it is alleged that companies like Ola and Uber are charging more fare than iPhone users, while Android users get the same ride cheaper.
A survey in January also revealed that different prices were seen on both operating systems for a single ride. Experts are calling it a case of ‘dark pattern’. This may include non-perfect changes, forced recovery and hidden fees in prices. Doing this is illegal under the consumer law.
Companies denied allegations, government ordered an inquiry
On the complaint of the iPhone user, the Consumer Protection Authority issued a letter on 10 February seeking answers from the companies. Ola and Uber refused to accept these allegations. After this, the government has sent the case to the DG (Investigation) for a detailed investigation.
According to the rule, discrimination in fares is illegal
- Under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, platform companies are prevented from improper pricing and incorrectly recovering money from consumers.
- If the allegations are found to be true in the investigation, then strict action can be taken against these companies.
App shows more app to regular customer
After the share of these screen shots on social media, we also checked the fare from MP Nagar in Bhopal to Rajabhoj Airport on Ola app in iPhone and Android devices. In this, the fare in Android was showing us Rs 310-301.
At the same time, this fare in iPhone was Rs 322-368. At the same time, after checking the second time, he was telling more fare in Android. That is, in many places there is more money in Android and in the iPhone. Experts say that this is caused by a user behavior. If you are a regular customer, then you will get more money even if your device is the same because the app tracks every activity.
