One nation one election: The process of discussion with the legalists of the Joint Parliamentary Committee constituted on the Constitution Amendment Bill regarding one country (One Nation One Election) is going on. In the fifth meeting of JPC held on Monday (March 17, 2025), former Solicitor General of the country Harish Salve and retired Justice AP Shah, the chairman of the twentieth Law Commission, shared their opinion in front of the members of the committee.
According to sources, while Harish Salve supported the elections simultaneously and described the proposed bill as favorable to the Constitution, AP Shah raised the question and said that there will be a legal obstacle in it. Like the earlier meetings, the fifth meeting was also quite long.
Justice Shah raised questions on the proposal
According to sources, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice AP Shah, while counting the flaws of the bill, questioned the recommendation of the Election Commission to further the assembly elections and said that the bill is against the federal structure. Along with this, he also expressed disagreement about the claims of savings made by holding elections at one time across the country.
What did Harish Salve say?
On the other hand, senior advocate Harish Salve described a country one election bill as a complete framework of the constitution. Let us tell you that a country under the chairmanship of former Salve President Ram Nath Kovind was also a member of the untouched committee formed on one election.
After the meeting, JPC chief PP Chaudhary said that there was a discussion in a positive atmosphere. Harish Salve spoke for three hours and AP Shah spoke for two hours and answered the questions. According to sources, the next week of the committee may be held next week. Soon a website will be released to know the opinion of common people.
