On Thursday (March 20, 2025) in Churachandpur district of Manipur, vehicles were absent from roads, attendance in schools and offices was low and security forces were patrolling the roads. According to the police, two days ago one person was killed and many people were injured in a clash between ‘Hamar’ and ‘Jomi’ communities.

People of Jomi community live mainly in Churachandpur city, while people of our and Kuki community are also inhabited in some areas. A few hours after the student organization called on the bandh in the district on Wednesday, many MLAs and tribal organizations appealed for peace.
In a joint statement, at least 12 cookie-zonesi and our organizations active in Churachandpur district have called for peace among communities and agreed to construct a joint peace committee to monitor the situation and prevent misconceptions in future. Six MLAs from Churachandpur and Ferjawal districts also jointly issued an appeal for peace and harmony and urged the administration to take necessary steps to restore law and order.
Since May 2023 in Manipur, more than 250 people have died in the ongoing ethnic violence between Meeti and Cookie communities and thousands of people have become homeless. After the resignation of N Biren Singh as Chief Minister, the Center imposed President’s rule in Manipur on 13 February and the state assembly was suspended. However, the term of the assembly was till 2027.
