Former Prime Minister of the country Dr. Manmohan Singh died on Thursday night at the age of 92.

After the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, there has been controversy regarding his funeral and memorial. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Modi requesting him to perform the last rites only where a memorial could be built.

On this, the Home Ministry said late on Friday night, ‘Nigambodh Ghat has been chosen for the last rites. The memorial of former PM will be built in Delhi. A suitable place will be found for this and a trust will be formed.

Congress sources said that Dr. Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur wanted the last rites to take place where a memorial could be built.

Congress leader KC Venugopal said- The government could not even find land to build a memorial of the former PM. This is an insult to the country’s first Sikh PM.

When it came to shortage of space, Priyanka Gandhi suggested building Dr. Singh’s memorial near Shakti Sthal (Indira Gandhi’s memorial) or Veerbhoomi (Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial).

On the other hand, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said, the tradition of respect should be followed in the context of the former Prime Minister. BJP should not set inappropriate example.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, not giving a place near Rajghat for the last rites of the great economist and the only Prime Minister coming from the Sikh community shows the small thinking of the government.

The country’s first Sikh PM, the fourth leader to hold this post for the longest time.

Manmohan Singh became the 14th Prime Minister of the country in 2004. He had completed two terms on this post till May 2014. He was the country’s first Sikh and fourth longest serving Prime Minister.

The Center has declared 7 days of national mourning on his death. Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Kharge went straight to Manmohan Singh’s residence after reaching Delhi late on Thursday night from Belagavi. Rahul wrote on X- I have lost my guide and guru. Congress has canceled all its programs till January 3.
